Text-shadow can be used to create some nifty and cool text effects. There is a useful text-shadow generator tool over at CSS3Gen: CSS3 Text Shadow Generator Trivia & Notes A positive value moves the shadow to the bottom of the text along the specified distance, a negative value moves it to the top. The y-offset is the vertical offset of the shadow. A positive value moves a shadow to the right of the text along the specified distance, a negative length moves it to the left. The x-offset is the horizontal offset of the shadow. The x and y offsets, on the other hand, are obligatory. Negative values cause the shadow shape to contract. The way the blur radius works is that positive values cause the shadow shape to expand in all directions by the specified radius. Negative values are not allowed for the blur radius. Otherwise, the larger the value, the more the shadow’s edge is blurred. If the blur value is zero, the shadow’s edge is sharp. The blur radius is optional, if you don’t specify it, the browser uses the default blur radius value which is zero. The 3 length values defining each shadow are: the x-offset (horizontal distance), y-offset (vertical distance), and “blur radius” of the shadow. Not only can you set the position, blur and color of the shadow, but you can also set its opacity using the alpha value (same for hsla colors). Using rgba colors has an advantage over using hexadecimal colors, for instance, because it adds yet another dimension to work with. The color can be set using the different formats available (including RGB and HSL colors). If no color is specified the shadow has the resulting color of the ink that it shadows. The shadows may thus overlay each other, but they never overlay the text itself.Įach shadow is specified by 2 to 3 length values (third value is optional) and an optional. The shadows are applied front-to-back: the first shadow is on top. It accepts a comma-separated list of shadow effects to be applied to the text of the element.Įach shadow is applied to the element’s text and all its text decorations (composited together). Think “soft”, “faded” or “blurry” effects over your images. The text-shadow property is used to add shadows to text. If you can blur the shadow into the background, it will make your text pop just enough to really catch the eye (without being overbearing). Your drop shadow or glow effect should “lift” the design… it shouldn’t become the design. Apply a light color for a glow effect, against a dark background. Here are two simple rules to help you keep your drop shadow text effects in check: Overshadowing is one of the most common mistakes people make. Let’s say it together: Not all type needs a text effect. If all we see is a drop shadow, then you need to rein it in a little.Īnd please, for the love of all things typography, only use text effects on type that you want to highlight. One of the biggest dangers with text effects is to over-do them. Please include attribution to with this graphic. Here’s an example of cringe-worthy color contrast: Your text effect should also contrast with the background. So, over and above thinking about brand colors, you need to think about which ones are the most important.Ĭontrast can be achieved with light and dark, color, shape, texture, size… and of course text effects.Įnsure that your type color contrasts with the effect you use (shadow or glow). Text effects are no different and require you to decide who’s boss! It tells your design “who’s boss!”īy that, we mean it tells us where we want someone to focus when they look at an image. When it comes to design, contrast is pretty important. Do’s and Don’ts for Creating Drop Shadow Text Effects that Don’t Suck 1 Do – Use Contrasting Colors Oh and there’s an Infographic and a super cool video if you prefer the visual way (scroll down). Let’s take a look at some Do’s and Don’ts for using text effects (in particular drop shadows and glow effects) in your designs. But unfortunately, many DIY designers missed the memo about how to use them correctly… to create text effects that don’t suck. There are so many DIY tools letting us drop shadows. This includes the clever use of light and dark, and text effects like drop shadows and glow.īut those same effects, rendered badly, can instantaneously make your design unpleasant to the eye, overbearing, or even worse… cheesy. When text effects are used well, they can draw people into your design, give it depth, and help to lift it. Let’s create text effects that don’t suck. Text effects like Drop Shadow can easily fall into the latter category when used badly. Are you sending your brand into the cringe-zone with bad drop shadows and text effects?ĭesign trends can be fickle – considered cool one year and cringe-worthy the next.

In the version of the fairy tale included by the Opies in their indispensable The Classic Fairy Tales, the Christian name of Little Red-Riding Hood is given as ‘Biddy’.Īs Dickens recalled in his short sketch ‘A Christmas Tree’: ‘I felt that if I could have married Little Red Riding-Hood, I should have known perfect bliss. We’ve been calling her ‘Little Red Riding-Hood’, but of course that’s only a nickname. She has not slept for eight nights, so anxious was she to come to you and to your house, Thrym.’Īll the better for conning you with, we might say. ‘Poor thing, poor thing,’ said Loki, ‘no wonder her eyes are glaring and staring. ‘Oh, how does it come that Freya has such glaring eyes?’ said Thrym. ‘Oh,’ said the Giants to Thrym’s mother, ‘we are not so sorry that we failed to win a bride from Asgard.’Īnd now a piece of the veil slipped aside and Thor’s eyes were seen for an instant. While the Giants watched, and while Loki nudged and nodded, he drank three barrels of mead. The servants were kept coming with measures to Thor. Thrym ordered his servants to bring a measure to his bride. Thor nodded his head toward the mead vat. ‘What she has eaten is little after all.’ ‘Poor darling, poor darling,’ said the Giant. And Freya never ate upon the way, so anxious was she to see Thrym and to come to his house.’ ‘No wonder she eats, poor thing,’ said Loki to Thrym. ‘These maids of Asgard,’ said the Giants to each other, ‘they may be refined, as Thrym’s mother says, but their appetites are lusty enough.’ The bride is really Thor in disguise (the similarities between this tale and Little Red Riding-Hood are already becoming apparent), so the mischievous Loki has to do some serious sales patter here: The Opies draw a link between this exchange and one found in the Elder Edda (thirteenth century), which sees the Norse night-god Loki explaining the somewhat unfeminine attributes of the ‘woman’ who is being offered to the giant Thrym as his bride. It turns out that this, too, is older than the 1690s version of the fairy tale published by Perrault. It is the girl’s failure to follow this instruction that leads to her encounter with the big bad wolf, and her subsequent fate (though as we’ve seen, she’s brought back from the dead, or at least from the wolf’s belly, in the Grimms’ version).īut it is that final conversation between the wolf and Little Red Riding-Hood which remains iconic. The Brothers Grimm made the moral clearer, with Little Red-Cap being told by her mother not to stray from the path. LVL beams are a high-quality building product that is an excellent choice for most modern homes. LVL will last longer and stay straighter with the higher upfront cost than the lower-cost option. Expensive – LVL costs approximately twice as much to purchase as standard dimensional lumber.LVL can delaminate if left exposed to the weather and weaken the structural integrity of the building. Susceptible to Damage – In outdoor applications where a beam is exposed to the elements, an LVL is not the best choice. You should never stack other materials on top of LVL wood and only load it in one direction. Uneven Strength – Another downside is that LVL is very strong, but only on one axis, because of the stacking of layers with the grain running in the same direction. If one piece of LVL board has swelled up, then all the other LVL lumber will be the same. LVL wood can swell and shrink with moisture content, similar to sawn lumber, but LVL tends to be uniform in swelling and shrinking. Warping – If not correctly stored, LVL will most likely warp even with the added strength.LVL work for interior and dry location applications. The adhesive on many LVL beams is waterproof, but that glue will start to delaminate with repeated water infiltration, weakening the LVL beam. Strong adhesives are the key to making LVL wood strong, resistant to mold, and resistant to termite infestations.Ī drawback of LVL is it is more susceptible to water damage and rot if it gets wet than traditional lumber. Being a composite, LVL is much less likely than dimensional lumber to twist, warp, shrink, or bow. The days of crooked and warped lumber are in the past. Engineered LVL lumber is made in a factory and is robust, straight, and more uniform than dimensional lumber. Is LVL Stronger than Dimensional Lumber?ĭimensional lumber in today’s market is grown quicker with wider spaced growth rings and is not as strong as it once was. Other manufacturers also make LVL engineered products, and all use similar processes for making engineered lumber. Weyerhauser referred to the product as “Microlam” for two years until then changed it to “Microllam.” Many still refer to Microlam when speaking of Microllam as they are frequently interchanged to identify all types of laminated veneer lumber. Microlam and Microllam refer to the same LVL product. Microlam is a common misspelling of Microllam, a Weyerhauser brand of engineered wood products. They are cut to size, wrapped, and prepped for storage or transportation. The process to get to a finished LVL beam starts with debarking the log, then rotary peeling the veneer to send the sheets to the jet tube dryers to reduce the moisture content to 8-10%.Īfter drying, the manufacturer grades the veneer sheets, gets a resin application, and compresses the sheets until dry. The most common wood used in LVL beams is Douglas fir. During World War II, plywood became an essential war material. There is recorded use by the Chinese, English, French, and Russians well before the 20th century, and it received its first patent in 1856. An LVL engineering process uses multiple layers of thin wood assembled with adhesives.Įngineered lumber was first seen in use as early as ancient Egypt. LVL is typically made in a factory, straighter, more uniform, and stronger than traditional milled lumber. The difference is that plywood changes the grain’s direction with each layer, and LVL keeps the grain direction the same. LVL stands for Laminated Veneer Lumber and is similar to plywood in appearance. Video can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: What is Laminated Veneer Lumber? (LVL) () |
